Amazing Oahu Hikes for every Ability Level (with Pictures!)

When you’re in Hawaii, an amazing way to explore the beauty of the islands is to go on a fun hike. If you’re wondering which you should do, these are five Oahu hikes that range from easy to challenging, for every ability level.

Quick Note: Hiking Tips

I would highly recommend going on a hike earlier in the morning. It is usually ideal for a few reasons:

First, less crowds! Who doesn’t love less traffic on the trails. Not only will there be less passing, but you can get a great picture at the top without others in your photo.

Second, the sun. The morning will be cooler and have less direct sunlight. During the day in the pounding sun you are more likely to get sunburnt or heat exhaustion.

Third, more daylight to enjoy your hike! Going in the morning means you’ll have all day to enjoy your outing before the sun sets. You’ll even find many locals like to get out early to enjoy the sun rise during their favourite Oahu hikes.

With these tips in mind, here are the best Oahu hikes from beginner to more advanced:

Ka’ena Point Trail – Beginner

Cool Feature: Possible Whale Spotting

This trail is mostly flat and great for beginners. This trail runs right along the ocean, which makes for beautiful views the whole way. At the end you’ll get to Ka’ena Point, which is where I personally saw Whales! It was amazing to see them breaching and enjoying the water right off this spot. As this trail is not shaded by trees, you’ll want to make sure you are wearing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Manoa Falls – Beginner/Moderate

Cool Feature: Gorgeous Waterfall

If you’re looking for Oahu Hikes that take you to a waterfall, this one should definitely be on your list. You trek through the lush and green jungle to an incredible tall waterfall. Unfortunately, you cannot swim at the waterfall, but the view of the falls and the beautiful trek through the thick jungle still makes this one worth it. Make sure to wear good shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy for this hike.

Diamond Head – Moderate

Cool Feature: Best view of Waikiki

This hike is a must for first-time visitors to Oahu as you get an incredible view of Honolulu! I have seen people completing this hike in flip-flops, but decent walking shoes are definitely recommended. If you are claustrophobic there is a small tunnel to be mindful of, but overall this is a great easy hike with an incredible view as a reward.

Protip: For a challenge, go early in the morning before the crowds and jog up this trail for a great workout.

Diamond Head Hike: Moderate Ability Level

Lanikai Pillbox Hike – Moderate

Cool Feature: Ridge Hike with a View of Mokulua Islands

This hike is a bit steep, but it leads to gorgeous views at the top of the West Side of Oahu. You’ll be able to spot the iconic Moku Nui and Moku Iki islands (Pictured below from Lanikai Beach).

Koko Head – Challenging

Cool Feature: Railway Stairs

This hike is challenging for a number of reasons. The trail is actually an old railroad track, meaning the steps are very uneven. There is even a section where you either have to balance across the tracks or walk below them to get through. It is also a very steep trek, meaning even if you’re in shape you’ll be breathing quite hard. Lastly there is no protection from trees from the sun, so on a warm day you’ll be sweating extra hard.

The view from the top is gorgeous though! I loved the feeling of accomplishment after finishing this hike and would highly recommend it if you’re up for the challenge.
